Le Silence de la mer (The Silence of the sea) - Vercors

Le Silence de la mer is a wonderful tale of the French resistance against the Nazis during World War Two. The novella beautifully portrays how difficult it was for French citizens to actuate the resistance by highlighting how the officers were kind and merely indoctrinated by Nazi propaganda which makes the book even more pertinent.

The book tells the story of a man (the narrator) and his niece when a German officer comes to live with them. The officer seems kind and he talks about his life in Germany, but by not speaking, the narrator and his niece show resistance against the Nazi occupation. The officer is a composer who dreams of friendship between France and Germany, indoctrinated by Nazi propaganda. He is shocked when he realises that the actual aim is to ruin and destroy instead of rebuilding. He chooses to go to the Eastern front to fight, saying that he is going to hell.

I love the theme of love which runs through this novella as it contrasts the stereotypical ideas of hatred and fighting that we associate with war. The officer is always talking about his love for France; from the culture to the music to the literature, he loves them all. Nearly the first thing that he says is "I have always loved France" which seems bizarre for a Nazi officer, but shows that they were human as well. I feel sorry for the officer because you can see that he is a courteous, sincere, normal man but he was poisoned by the Nazis. He seems like a puppy with hope that what he does will unite the countries that he loves. From another perspective, love is also important on the part of the French as, despite the difficulties they had in carrying out the resistance, they did it to protect the country they loved.

My favourite idea in the novella is the idea of silence as here it has so many meanings. In the novella, the narrator and the niece don't speak to the officer and silence is often mentioned by Vercors so the novella has a strange atmosphere because you are always waiting for the silence to be broken and so there is a really slow progression. The main reason that I love this theme is because the silence is a symbol of so many things. It could simply be the silence of the narrator and his niece. It could be the 'silence' of the actual book - it was created in an illegal printing press and became a symbol of the intellectual resistance; a resistance without heard words but with written words (silent words). But also it could signify the comparative silence of the towns in France and the 'noisy' fighting on the battlefields with the gunfire. The title could be a metaphor with the silence which represents the people in France during the resistance who did things which were small but big at the same time and the sea which is the confusion of the war and the vicious conflict.

For me, the beauty of this book lies within the hidden meanings of the themes because they are simple ideas which are so effective in portraying the importance of the resistance. Vercors influenced many people so that they stayed strong in the face of the Nazis and, given that we celebrated the 75th anniversary of VE day this year, this message is even more profound.

Le Silence de la mer est un récit marveilleux de la résistance française contre les Nazis pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale. La nouvelle décrit magnifiquement la difficulté qu'ont eue les citoyens français à effectuer la résistance en soulignant que certains officiers nazis étaient aimables et simplement endoctrinés par la propagande nazie, ce qui la rend encore plus pertinente.

Le livre décrit le récit d'un homme (le narrateur) et sa nièce quand un officier allemand vient pour vivre avec eux. L'officier semble aimable et il parle de sa vie en Allemagne mais en ne parlant pas, le narrateur et sa nièce montrent résistance contre l'occupation Nazi. L'officier est un compositeur qui rêve de l'amitié entre la France et l'Allemagne, endoctriné par la propagande Nazi. Il est choqué quand il réalise que le défi actuel est à ruiner et détruire au lieu de construire. Il choisit à aller au front oriental pour combattre, disant qu'il va au enfer.

J'aime le thème de l'amour qui traverse cette nouvelle, car il contraste avec les idées stéréotypées de haine et de combat que nous associons à la guerre. L'officier toujours parle de son amour pour la France - de la culture à la musique à la littérature, l'officier les adore tous. Presque le première chose qu'il dit est "j'ai toujours aimé la France" que semble bizarre pour un officier Nazi mais cela montre que les officiers étaient humains aussi. D'un autre point de vue, l'amour est également important de la part des Français car, malgré les difficultés qu'ils ont eues à mener la résistance, ils l'ont fait pour protéger le pays qu'ils aimaient.

Mon idée préférée dans la nouvelle est l'idée du silence car ici elle a tant de significations. Le silence est un symbole de la Résistance française pendant la seconde Guerre monidale. Dans la nouvelle, le narrateur et la nièce ne parle pas au officier et le silence est souvent mentionné par Vercors donc la nouvelle a une ambiance un peu bizarre car tous les temps, tu attends pour le silence d'être rompu et donc il y a une progression vraiment lente. J'adore ce thème car il y a plusieurs des significations.

Qu'est-ce-que c'est, le silence, ici? Il peut être simplement, le silence du narrateur et le silence de la nièce. Ou il peut être le silence de le livre actuel - le livre a été créé dans une impremerie illégalle est ont dévenu un symbole de la Résistance intellectual; une résistance sans les mots entendus mais avec les mots écrits (les mots silencieux). Mais auusi il peut signifier le silence relatif des villes en France, contrastant avec les combats 'bruyants' sur les champs de bataille avec les coups de feu - le titre peut être une métaphore avec le silence qui répresente les personnes en France pendant la Résistance qui font des choses petits mais grand au même temps et la mer qui est la confusion de la Guerre et le combat vicieux.

Pour moi, la beauté de ce livre réside dans le sens caché des thèmes car ce sont des idées simples qui sont si efficaces pour dépeindre l'importance de la résistance. Vercors a influencé beaucoup de gens pour qu'ils restent forts au face des nazis et, étant donné que nous avons célébré le 75e anniversaire de la journée de la VE cette année, ce message est encore plus profond.
